These pear or gourd shaped pendants are called “bermil” and originated with the Zayane Amazigh (Berber) people located in the central Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco and are traditionally worn by the Zayane tribal dancers in the Khénifra region. These hollow pendants usually have small coins and coral or glass beads attached along the bottom edge and may have originally contained written prayers or other sayings to protect the wearer. These pendants are usually worn on necklaces or the chains suspended between fibula pins.
