Vintage Banjara “gajre ball” bracelet has five clusters of small bells called gajre. These small bells are wired together to create a ball-shape that is in turn wired to the bracelet band itself. Because these bells are not soldered in place, there is some movement to them. Three smaller clusters of bells provide a tiny bit of sound. The small bells that make up the gajre balls are traditionally made of silver and are solid, threaded on a silver wire, than then attached to the bracelet. On some types of Indian bracelets, the gajre balls are simulated instead of made up of many small pieces and are made of stamped sheet silver.
The Banjara people of India, known by numerous names including Pindari, Lambani, Labhani Muka, and many others are a traditionally nomadic people. They are now found mostly in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana. The word "Banjara" is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning "wanderers of the jungle". Banjara women are known to wear beautifully decorated and colorful clothing, enhanced with shells, mirrors, coins and embroidery and adorn themselves with heavy and highly ornamented jewelry made of silver, and natural and found objects, including glass, wood, bone, reeds, grass and shells.
