Single fibula pin with twisted wire design and large red glass jewel. This piece is smaller than most fibula pins, and is quite old. There is no bale at the bottom of this pin. This single piece would be perfect for jewelry making or wearing as a decorative brooch.

In a full fibula set with a pair of pins, there is a long decorative handmade chain running from the bottom of one pin to the bottom of the other, and sometimes incorporates small pendants or coins. In Morocco and other North African countries, women traditionally wear a garment made from a long piece of fabric that is wrapped around the body. The ends are fastened at the shoulders with embellished pins like these - the original safety pin! Berber jewelry is large, showy, colorful and FUN!  It often includes lots of detail like enamel in bright colors, large jewels and coins.  It represents much more than simply adornment.  Each piece can signify fertility, wealth, social status and marital status.  The Berbers or Imazighen (‘Free people’; plural of Amazigh) are the original inhabitants of North Africa. They speak a number of related languages and share a common cultural heritage. Most Berbers nowdays live in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
